Raekwon on Performing at Rikers Island for ODB and the Origins of Wu Tang
The album won’t be available for commercial release for another 88 years, which means that leaves us with plenty of time to reflect on how the Wu has affected our lives. In honor of their achievement, here’s a not very definitive power ranking of the original members of the wu tang name generator-Tang Clan. At that time, I had a bunch of goons around me. What was said, what was said sideways, like a sideways dart.
However, Lamar would later learn that Tiffith’s impact on his life dates back to multiple encounters between his father and the TDE founder, which Lamar raps about in his 2017 track “DUCKWORTH.” Due to the breakthrough success of his Aftermath Entertainment debut (good kid, m.A.A.d city), most people attribute Kendrick Lamar’s discovery to fellow Compton legend Dr. Dre. But seven years before Dre’s label came calling, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith saw potential in a 16-year-old rapper by the wutang name generator of K.Dot. This firsthand account of spending the most joyous holiday locked up and separated from the one you love offers a different kind of longing than the average lonesome Christmas tune. He created visual stories with his words and the influx of his voice alone. GZA, a cult favorite and cerebral member of the Wu, also dropped an equally important album with Liquid Swords.
Most notably, the charismatic wordsmith of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan. He is considered to be one of the most influential and versatile rap artists of all time. This December Wu-Tang Clan released their new studio album “A Better Tomorrow” (which was also distributed as a bluetooth speaker). That is no the whole story though, there is also album called “Once Upon Time in Shaolin”, but there is one catch. There is only one of them in existence. Apparently someone has already offered 5 million of it as well.
But mostly there were fall decorations, a few flags for favorite football teams and, more than any other item, American flags. That’s basically the origin story of the signs. In 2020, a Wu-Tang Clan fan in Staten Island made a few signs and began selling them there. When others began making them and selling them online, they began appearing around the country, including in Wing’s yard in Jacksonville. For the record, I can honestly say we do get along with the neighbors who put up signs for a candidate we’d never vote for.
“No one had seen a group of nine emcees like us with so much charisma and talent.” How exactly did 10 emcees (mostly) from Staten Island combine martial arts, The Five-Percent Nation’s spiritual principles, Stapleton Housing Projects and gritty street tales—and actually win? And they didn’t just win, they took the whole jackpot, transporting themselves from the hood to heaven right before our eyes. The album was handed over as part of a $7.4m deal with a notorious former drug firm executive.
The flawless production, profound wordplay and impeccable execution are remarkable. And perhaps it was actually Wu-Tang that did not allow us to crown a group leader, and make inevitable comparisons. It is hard to make comparisons in the clique, because each member brings such a unique element. It’s like trying to pick between steak and chicken, both are good. It just depends on what you have a taste for in that moment. It is about preference, nothing more.
