Employee Spotlight: Tatiana Uehara

How long have you been at EarthDaily Agro?

I joined EarthDaily Agro two years ago. I have a degree in Geography from the University of São Paulo in Brazil and a master’s degree in Remote Sensing from the National Institute of Space Research (INPE). I lived in Seoul, South Korea, for six months during a student exchange program, and that’s where I fell in love with geospatial technology. I have experience with drones for precision agriculture, and while working on my master’s, I focused on orbital data to support risk management regarding landslide disasters in the south of Brazil.

What’s your current position, and what does it entail?

As a data scientist based in Brazil, I support customers with their local demands by translating their key pain points into solutions that can be developed inside our technical team. Besides coding, remote sensing data processing and modelling, I also engage with the sales team to give support on deliveries and maintenance.

Have you grown professionally while on our team?

Yes, for sure. Not only I have evolved professionally and have seen the Brazilian team grow intensely since I arrived, but I also feel very motivated by all the experts who work with me daily. I love having such smart people above me who can teach me and guide me along the best path. Sometimes I feel like I’m doing a PhD! For everything we develop, the team will give constructive feedback, with high expectations for good methodological references, accuracy metrics, different types of tests, and good documentation. This learning approach guarantees a solid foundation for any project.

Why EarthDaily Agro? Or what sets EarthDaily Agro apart?

EarthDaily Agro is a company that focuses on great-quality data. We have developed our own data processing pipelines, our own cloud masks, and our own way to improve sensors’ quality. The good old saying “Trash in, trash out” is our mantra. We believe that above all else, our primary data must be impeccable, and from that, we can develop models that will perform naturally better. We don’t push buttons; we are experts in remote sensing, agriculture, geography, meteorology, machine learning, and deep learning who use coding as a tool to solve problems.

What accomplishment during your time at EarthDaily Agro are you most proud of?

I’m proud to have been the first data scientist hired outside of France and to have truly supported the local team to thrive. Being the bridge between the sales team in Brazil and the technical team in France was a challenge I’m very proud of having achieved. After two years, I now see our credit product fully operational and automated for Brazil. Knowing I was part of this development makes me very satisfied.

Describe your values and how they inform your career.

Respect, responsibility, and teamwork are my core values. With those in place, I believe we can work in a healthy way, respecting the limitations of one another and recognizing our talents as well.

Why do you like your job? What do you find most interesting?

I love working with geospatial data. It’s so powerful to be able to use this type of data to develop solutions that can be applied to the whole globe. I’ve always loved looking from the airplane window and seeing the world from the top, understanding that we are a small part of the whole. I feel like that every day looking at satellite images. Besides, at EarthDaily Agro, I can work with a global team and speak English, French, Portuguese and Spanish!

What do you think of the EarthDaily Constellation arrival?

The constellation’s arrival will be a game-changer for the orbital high-resolution imagery market. It will allow us to analyze phenomena that were impossible before. The potential of the constellation is clear, but I’m sure that when we put our hands on the data, we will be able to generate solutions that weren’t even envisioned before.

What perspectives will open up within the framework of your work?

Looking at it from the data science point of view, we will be able to create ground truth data remotely, which is one of the main barriers we face currently. Also, having daily imagery will solve one of our main blockers: clouds!

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I love nature and travelling! My holidays usually include camping on the beach and tracking. I am also a judo practitioner, very dedicated to acquiring my black belt in the near future.
